The Joy of Solo Motorcycle Travel

"Aren't you afraid?" "Don't you get lonely?" These typical questions are regularly the initially you hear when someone finds out you are about to go on a solo motorcycle journey. Even though my travels pale in comparison to many other people, I have covered much of Canada and the US alone. I intend to do a lot much more.

Carla King, whose story is included in my forthcoming book on women, motorcycling and individual power, says "It's crucial to know you can go out there in the globe and this great, fantastic stuff is going to take place to you." She knows. She's traveled solo all more than the globe, on typically unreliable indigenous motorcycles, among them Urals, Guzzis, Chang Jiangs and Enfields. Her internet site is full of stories of her solo adventures and makes for fascinating reading. But be forewarned. It could possibly spark an irreversible urge to try something on your own!

All this is not to say I don't enjoy the corporation of others. Riding with 1 or two others can be most enjoyable. I even like riding as a passenger oftentimes if it is with the right person. But solo travels are in a category all to themselves.

Here are ten characteristics that make it so great for the soul.

  1. Independence. You are absolutely on your own schedule. You can go exactly where you want, when you want. When you uncover a particularly appealing place and decide to stay an extra day, you can do so without messing up anybody else's plans.

  2. Resourcefulness. You understand to be inventive and come across out how little you honestly will need to get by.

  3. Confidence. This is big! Points take place when you're out there and you find out to manage on your own. You're forced to call on your own strength and ingenuity to sort factors out. It's stunning what you find out about your capabilities.

  4. Approachability. Persons method you a lot more readily than they would if you had been with even one other person. They are fascinated, particularly when they see a woman traveling alone. They are engaging and welcoming.

  5. Receptiveness. Individuals are significantly more receptive to you when you method them. You meet the most remarkable individuals.

  6. Preferred seating. Usually when all seats are taken at a restaurant or show, there's space for 1 even more. Or they can squeeze you in somewhere. These seats are regularly offered at a lowered rate as well.

  7. Mechanical aptitude. You get to know a lot about your bike and have an understanding of it's idiosyncrasies and wants. If something is going wrong, you can frequently pick up early warning signs. Also builds confidence.

  8. Serendipity. It happens when you are out there with others, but never to the exact same extent. At least, not that you notice.

  9. Freedom. There is something so ultimately freeing when you're out there crossing the country one thing that you only really feel when you're alone.

  10. Connection with spirit. This goes beyond freedom. It's a feeling of becoming alone and connected at the same time. It's more than becoming 1 with your bike. Some thing else happens when you are out there alone, moving by means of nature and you really feel a profound interconnectedness with the universe.

If you've by no means tried solo travel, you owe it to your self to do so. Start off with smaller actions. Possibly a half day ride. Yes it can be frightening and you might possibly have to give your self a pep talk before leaving. But as soon as you're out on the open road, all that falls away. The rewards are extraordinary.
